Speeches, Expectations and Friends

Dear Sherlock,

Do you ever try to live up to other people’s expectations?

Wait, that’s a stupid question in retrospect. I know you don’t (for the most part). I know that you find it a failing of John’s that he’s worried about what other people think. I am a bit like that unfortunately. But only with specific people. I think that may be your exception as well.

How did you feel after the speech? Did it meet your expectations? And meet John’s?

I hate giving speeches being the introvert that I am but I feel like I can write something down that would be great…but it never quite translates well. I had to do two speeches before at weddings, but I will be making one at my brother’s wedding later this year. I’m not sure I’m up to the task for aforementioned reasons but I’ll have to give it a go. I’ve got months to do this so hopefully I’ll write something someday that it went well.

Do you think doing a speech on behalf of Mycroft would have stressed you out as much? (I don’t think so, but am I wrong?)

Brothers

Dear Sherlock,

Siblings are strange aren’t they? (I would broaden this to family, but I feel parents deserve their own letter…) I am not close with my brothers. We just live in the world of polite indifference (even moreso since we do not live geographically close). When I visit family, it’s only then I realize how unnatural our interactions feel to me.

Society expects us to get along don’t they? We don’t get to choose them. We are born, and they’re just…there. This group of people we’re told we must tolerate and have affection for. Why? Most time you don’t share much other than genetic material. I have the also unfortunate circumstance as growing up in a different country to my siblings so we don’t have a common or shared childhood. Adds to the distance you see. We don’t fight or anything, we just aren’t close. It could be worse I guess. But I wouldn’t turm to my brothers for support just as you often don’t turn to Mycroft.

But why are you and Mycroft at war with each other? There does seem to be genuine affection between you, all things considered.
